OTTAWA, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Meeting the demand for customers who wish to migrate from the Wind River VxWorks operating system, the VxWorks-to-QNX porting guide has proven to be an increasingly popular developer's tool. The guide was launched one year ago and has been downloaded by developers from almost 1,000 companies, making it the most popular download offered from the QNX® website.
The growing number of customers seeking alternatives to Wind River products is driving the tremendous demand for the porting guide. Traditional embedded systems, with their static, single-purpose design, were once adequately serviced by the realtime executive architecture of the VxWorks operating system. But with the increasing complexity of today's embedded applications, coupled with high expectations for reliability and serviceability, developers require a more advanced and flexible realtime operating system (RTOS).
Many companies doing embedded design have begun the process of migrating their development environments off the aging VxWorks 5.4 platform onto the QNX Neutrino® RTOS and its related integrated development environment, the QNX Momentics® development suite. By moving to the QNX Neutrino RTOS and its modular microkernel architecture, designers can more easily build reliable, scalable, and high-performance systems.
AAI, a defense subcontractor, recently used the guide when porting legacy VxWorks code to a new QNX-based acoustic layer design. "We knew it would a be daunting task to migrate legacy VxWorks code," said Gary Townsend, lead software engineer at AAI. "However, once we downloaded and viewed the QNX porting guide, we knew that this tool would be extremely helpful in completing the port. The guide saved about six-months in man hours."
