I wrote a test program that does malloc of 1K until it's running out of
memory.

On a 2G machine with 1.8 gig free, it allocates up to 1G.

On a 3G machine with 2.1 gig free, it allocates up to 720Megs.

On a 3G machine with 2.6 Gig free, it allocates up to 1G.

Explanation and maybe solution, pretty please?
