OTTAWA, May 10, 2004 - QNX Software Systems today announced that the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) will be shipping as part of the Cisco uMG9850 QAM Module, a new quadrature amplitude modulation product designed to let cable operators use Gigabit Ethernet to deliver video-on-demand and other multimedia services efficiently and cost-effectively to TV set-top receivers.Data-centric video processing has precise timing requirements, making it an ideal application for the hard realtime capabilities of the QNX Neutrino RTOS. With its preemptible microkernel and priority-based preemptive scheduler, the QNX Neutrino RTOS delivers response times that are both fast and highly predictable. High-priority programs can meet their deadlines on time, every time, even under heavy processor loads.

QNX delivers substantially faster time-to-market by providing a microkernel architecture that simplifies debugging, diagnostic tools that help optimize performance, and off-the-shelf hardware support that gives project teams an early start on application development. By using a true microkernel, the QNX Neutrino RTOS allows all applications, drivers, and protocol stacks to run in the safety of memory-protected user space, enabling the high degree of fault-tolerance demanded by mission-critical communications products.

These same qualities have made QNX a leading OS supplier to the broadcast and cable industries, with deployments in video servers, MPEG-2 stream manipulation products, and control systems that automate the entire broadcast process. Designed for highly predictable, 24/7 performance, these systems rely on QNX Neutrino's frame-accurate playout capabilities, intelligent error recovery, and dynamic scalability.

"Once again, QNX is at the heart of a breakthrough technology that promises to redefine the digital video infrastructure business," said Dan Dodge, CEO of QNX Software Systems. "QNX is committed to delivering a scalable, reliable software architecture and the most open development tools on the market, so that our customers can maintain their competitive edge by getting their advanced products to market in record time."
