VME or CPCI?

Post by Krupa » Wed Oct 01, 2003 11:57 am

Hi,

I am a QNX4.25 user but am new to QNX RTP operating system though we
have . We plan to implement a data monitoring and control system using QNX
RTP. We have considered 2 options for hardware selection. One option is VME
bus cards (Manufacturer = VMIC) and second option is CPCI-based cards
(Manufacturer = ADLINK). We have not yet
finalised the hardware selection. I was wondering which of the two would be
more suitable/compatible for use with QNX RTP.

Does anyone have any experience of comparing CPCI or VME for QNX RTP?

Thanks in advance,
Krupa

Hi Krupa!

I have been using VMIC boards ( VMIVME7750 and VMIVME7765 ) for the past
year. VMIC VME driver are good and I have encounter only minor problems
with them. The issues were quickly fix by VMIC. Their support is
excellent. If you need a high speed bus because you need to pass around a
lot of data via the bus, go with cPCI, since currently they have the faster
throuthput. VME is caching up but any board with VME320 are still hard to
find. VMIC did mentioned to me that they are working on one. Also be aware
that cPCI does have limitation on the number of board you can have on the
bus, compare to VME that can have up to 21 board on the same bus. cPCI does
have a way around this by using bridges on the back plane.

We use the CF card to boot QNX from. By the way we are suing RTP 6.1A

Cheers!, Steph

Sorry people!,

It should have been "using", and not "suing". Slippery finger
