fs-pkg: dir access time

Post by Alain Bonnefoy » Thu Nov 06, 2003 1:01 pm

Hi,
Normally when we add a file in a directory, the access time of the
directory is changed.
That's not the case about a directory belonging to fs-pkg.
Is it expected?

Alain.

Remember, the Package File System isn't real.
_It's all in your mind._

The real directories are in:
/var/pkg/spill

Ok Bill anyway I think it's not impossible to manage these infos. fs-pkg
owns the attribute structures of any dir/file it manages so, it could
control these fields.

Well Alain, your kind of preaching to the choir on this one.
I'm not a big fan of the QNX package system. I use it on one server
just to make it easy to upgrade software. On all of my other systems
I just copy over the underlying files and directories.
I believe that it's faster and saves memory. Not to mention that
there are several know bugs, excuse me, features dealing with access
rights, times, etc.

I'm definitively fan of fs-pkg. About speed, I'm not really sure that
it's really noticeable, maybe in case of intensive disk access.
About memory, I made some test to have an idea and I can say that fs-pkg
needs about twice of disk space, which is often not a problem, even on
flash disk. About memory space, that not significant.
That sayed, I think fs-pkg greatly simplify our customer installations
and updates. Same remark for our developments.
desinstall a 'dev. in progress' version to install a previous one and
vice versa or a different config is very cool. I'm really not ready to
do differently.
I find fs-pkgs very strong, I use for 4 years now, and I never had any
problem with it. But, we will use it really more intensively in the next
months, we will see...

Alain.
